Cast of Characters
W. Kamau Bell: An African-American standup comic, television host of United Shades of America and Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell.
Dick Costolo: CEO of Twitter from 2010 to 2015; after hearing Lindy’s episode about trolling on This American Life, he promised to fix the problem of trolls on his social media platform.
“Paw West Donezo”: A troll who pretended to be Lindy’s father by creating an email account and Twitter profile. He harassed Lindy until she fought back. Surprisingly, he apologized, and the two went on to do an interview on This American Life. He was sad, lonely, overweight, and claimed to feel threatened by Lindy’s happiness with her life and her body. He is the only troll to have ever apologized to her.
Meagan: Lindy’s friend from high school and fellow lover of all things comedy. She is smart, clever, and funny.
Jim Norton: A comic and radio personality, he appeared with Lindy on the TV show Totally Biased to debate whether or not rape jokes are funny.
Ahamefule “Aham” J. Oluo: Lindy’s best friend-turned-husband, Aham is a twice-divorced father of two, standup comic, and jazz musician.
Dan Savage: Author, journalist, activist for the LGBTQ community, host of “Savage Love,” and editor-in-chief of the Stranger during Lindy’s tenure, Dan butts heads with Lindy publically over her defiant essay, “Hello, I Am Fat.”
Sister: Lindy’s unnamed sister is smart, honest, and strong. A lover of ritual, she prepares Lindy for the Red Tent festival. She also warns Lindy that she’s holding on too tight to Aham, right before Lindy and Aham break up.
Daniel Tosh: The television host of Tosh.0 and a standup comedian popular with the “bro” community who gained notoriety for his offensive gang rape retort directed at a female audience member at The Laugh Factory in Los Angeles in 2012. He is known for his deliberately offensive style of comedy.
Ingrid West: Lindy’s mother (and Paul West’s fourth wife) is a retired nurse of strong, Norwegian stock. She isn’t big on fantasy, preferring real, normal things, and instilled in Lindy the grit she needs to continue writing about topics that are important to her, even though her writing makes her a target for trolls who threaten and humiliate her.
Lindy West: An American writer, comic, feminist, and fat acceptance activist, she narrates Shrill using humor, empathy, and honesty.
Paul West: Lindy’s father was a jazz musician, an ad copywriter, and a dreamer who nurtured Lindy’s love of fantasy. He died of cancer in 2011.
